Every specification meeting now includes the same question: is it Matter-certified? It is a reasonable thing to ask, and an incomplete one.

Where it genuinely helps

Matter removes the commissioning tax. A certified device joins the network once and is then visible to Apple Home, Google Home and SmartThings simultaneously. On a multi-unit residential project that is a real saving in labour, and it removes an entire class of handover problem where a resident's preferred ecosystem was not the one the integrator commissioned against.

  • One commissioning pass instead of one per ecosystem
  • Local control that survives an internet outage
  • A credible answer when a client asks about vendor lock-in

Where it does not

Matter is a device layer, not a building layer. It has nothing to say about BMS integration, fire alarm interfacing, or the low-current infrastructure underneath. For anything above a villa in complexity, KNX or BACnet still carries the backbone and Matter sits at the edge.

The practical answer on most of our projects is both: a wired backbone for the systems that must never fail, and Matter at the leaf nodes where flexibility and resident choice matter more than determinism.
